What We Love About Victoria
In Victoria County resides the largest city and county seat, the city of Victoria. It’s located just 30 miles inland of the Gulf of Mexico, and often called “The Crossroads” due to its equidistant position between Corpus Christi, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin. In 1824, the city was founded by a Mexican empresario by the name of Martín Dé Leon. The name was chosen to honor the first president of Mexico, Guadalupe Victoria. While originally part of De León’s colony, founded that same year, it was combined into a single city. During the Texas Revolution, Mexican president Guadalupe Victoria contributed soldiers and supplies to pro-revolutionary forces. While the town was briefly occupied by Mexican forces who changed the name, the town’s residents later renamed it Victoria. During the early 1800s, the residents of Victoria dealt with strife typical for the era, including conflict with Native Americans and outbreaks of disease, including cholera.
Despite this, the city of Victoria quickly developed a large population of European immigrants in the mid-1800s, both because of its geographical location and the existence of prosperous industries like agriculture and petrochemicals. By the 1900s, Victoria was experiencing constant and impressive growth. In 1971, the University of Houston opened its Victoria campus. Today, Victoria is a large city, with a population of just over 111,000 people. It is often referred to as the “Golden Crescent,” due to the presence of seven counties and a retail trade area serving over 250,000 people. Additionally, Victoria has numerous museums, kids’ entertainment zones, and The Texas Zoo. There’s a lot to love about Victoria, but in the eyes of us at Davis Law Group, none of them quite compare the incredible residents that reside here. We’re honored to serve this friendly community, standing by their side during some of life’s greatest challenges
