What We Love About Alamo Heights
Alamo Heights is an incorporated city in Bexar County, Texas. It began in the 1890s when two early settlers founded their personal ranches along the Sweet Homestead and the Olmos Bluffs. George Washington Brackenridge and Charles Anderson's original homes put an emphasis on scenic vistas, towering trees, and a peaceful environment in the heart of Texas. In time, the land was bought up by an investment company and the Order of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate World, with the condition that all 280 acres of Alamo Heights were bought together and preserved. The Chamberlain Investment Company of Denver began planning a suburban residential development, turning Anderson's mansion into the now-Argyle Hotel. With their plan came streets that followed the rolling hills and preserved headwaters of the river, crafting beauty and natural charm in the city. Following the company's financial disaster, Alamo Heights became a melting pot of developers' passion projects.
Pockets of the neighborhood had varied architectural styles, and each attracted its own income groups, ages, and personalities. Through these diverse buildings and the people who inhabited them, Alamo Heights' character was established. It later went on to become a municipality of San Antonio in 1922. It is surrounded by the much larger San Antonio, which is the seventh most populous city in the United States. It has an estimated population of 8,000 people. Nearby neighborhoods include Lincoln Heights, Olmos Park, Brackenridge Park, Fort Sam Houston, and Terrell Hills. Even though it is a smaller city compared to others in Texas, there are a number of restaurants, stores, and attractions, within or immediately surrounding Alamo Heights that welcome both residents and visitors alike. Some of these include the Alamo Quarry Market, the North Star Mall, the McNay Art Museum, the San Antonio Zoo, and the headquarters for Clear Channel communications. Despite all of the great things Alamo Heights has to offer, still our favorite is the people.
